What exactly is a smith machine?

A smith machine slides up and down on shafts. The bar pivots so that the attach hooks can catch on the safeties.

The machine restricts the range of motion so some people like them. The downside of this motion restriction is that your balancers and stabilizers are not used and strenghted the way they would be doing non-restrictive presses.

Basically, I only like the smith for a couple of exercises- Shrugs and calf raises. They each have very limited range of motion anyway, so you're not missing out on much. When you do squats, shoulder presses, bench presses, etc. with a smith machine, you're missing out on all sorts of benefits

They are helpful though if you don't have a spotter. Greatly reduces the chance of dropping something on your head.
